Insulation by build date

Older homes need to breathe. Newer homes need depth. We match the material to the era.

Most installers offer one product. We work with four, because a 1900s cottage and a 1990s semi need very different things from their loft.

  1. Before 1920

    Sheep’s wool

Victorian, Edwardian, period and listed homes

Breathable, natural, kind to old timbers

Locally sourced British wool that manages moisture naturally, helping older roofs avoid condensation while keeping the heat in. Naturally fire-resistant and good for decades.

Plant-based alternative: hemp, the vegan equivalent with the same benefits.

  2. 1920s to 1960s

    MultiFOIL

Interwar and post-war homes with cut roofs

Slim, reflective, fitted to the rafters

A multi-layer foil system that keeps the whole loft warm in winter and cool in summer, takes up almost no space and turns the loft into usable storage. It is in every RJ storage room.

Also the base of our loft storage rooms, from £10,000.

  3. After the 1960s

    SupaSoft recycled plastic

Modern homes, often with trussed roofs

Soft, itch-free and made from bottles

Around 12,000 recycled single-use bottles per loft, laid across the loft floor for excellent depth without the irritation of fibreglass. Safe to handle and pleasant to live with.

Melts away from flame rather than spreading it.

Good questions

Straight answers, before you decide.

Which loft insulation is right for my home?

The age and construction of your home is the best starting point. Homes built before 1920 usually suit breathable sheep’s wool or hemp, which help manage moisture in older timbers. Homes from the 1920s to the 1960s often suit MultiFOIL. Homes built after the 1960s usually suit SupaSoft recycled plastic insulation.

Our insulation finder gives you a recommendation in a minute, and we confirm it with you on a free phone consultation.

How long does installation take?

Most loft insulation installs are completed in a single day. We agree the date and timescale with you before we start, and leave the loft clean and tidy.

What guarantees do you offer?

All RJ insulation comes with a lifetime guarantee for as long as your home stands. Separately, your installation is covered by a five-year insurance-backed warranty from the IWA (Independent Warranty Association). Ask our team for the full terms.

Do you cover my area?

RJ Insulation is based in Ipswich, Suffolk and installs across England and Scotland. Share your postcode in the calculator and we will confirm availability for your area.

What happens after I use the calculator?

You will see your recommendation straight away. A member of the RJ team then calls you to arrange a free 20 to 30 minute phone consultation, followed by an assessor visit and a written quote if you would like to go ahead. There is no obligation at any stage.
